What Is
Evidence-Based Treatment?

Evidence-based treatment combines the best available research with clinical expertise and patient values to inform and guide treatment decisions. In the context of addiction recovery, evidence-based treatment focuses on therapies scientifically proven effective for treating substance use disorders.
At San Diego Detox, integrating evidence-based treatment means we use proven modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). By grounding programs in research and clinical findings, we can then modify our therapies to meet the needs of the individual, helping them achieve improved well-being and lasting recovery.

This approach fosters a deeper understanding of those underlying issues contributing to addiction so we can support our clients.

FAQ

Treatment Modalities FAQs

Addiction treatment can include a variety of therapy approaches depending on someone’s needs. At San Diego Detox, treatment modalities include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, 12-step facilitation, family therapy and trauma-informed therapy. These approaches can help clients understand triggers, change unhealthy patterns, improve coping skills, rebuild relationships and address underlying pain contributing to substance use. Therapy isn’t used the same for everyone. The treatment plan needs to reflect a person’s individual history, symptoms, goals and readiness for change.

Detox helps the body stabilize, but therapy helps address the thoughts, behaviors, emotions and relationships connected to substance use. After withdrawal symptoms improve, many people still face cravings, shame, stress, trauma, anxiety, depression or the urge to return to old routines. Therapy gives them a place to work through those issues and build practical recovery skills. At San Diego Detox, therapy can be part of residential treatment and continued care planning so recovery doesn’t stop once the body is free from substances.

Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT, focuses on how thoughts, emotions and behaviors influence each other. It can help clients identify patterns leading to substance use and practice healthier responses. Dialectical behavior therapy or DBT, places more emphasis on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and relationship skills. Both can be useful in addiction treatment, especially when cravings are tied to stress, impulsivity, shame or conflict. We may use different modalities based on each client’s needs during treatment.

Yes. Family therapy can be part of addiction treatment when it’s appropriate and will be helpful for recovery. Addiction affects so many things in families, including trust, communication, boundaries and the emotional health of the entire family. Family therapy can help loved ones understand addiction, reduce blame, improve communication and learn how to support recovery without enabling harmful patterns. It’s not about shaming the person in treatment or blaming the family. At San Diego Detox, family involvement may be included in a broader recovery plan.

Trauma-informed therapy recognizes that many people with substance use disorders have also experienced trauma, loss, chronic stress or unsafe relationships. Rather than asking “what’s wrong with you,” trauma-informed care considers what happened and how it shaped coping patterns. The approach can help clients feel safer, more understood and less judged during treatment. For people who use substances to numb memories, anxiety or emotional pain, trauma-informed support can be a big part of recovery, and we do offer trauma-informed care as part of our larger treatment approach.
