At San Diego Detox, we integrate 12-Step Facilitation Therapy into a broader recovery framework that respects each client’s path. As someone who has guided many through both traditional and alternative recovery paths, I believe TSF offers a powerful foundation—when offered with flexibility, clarity, and compassion.
12-Step Facilitation Therapy (TSF) is a widely recognized, effective approach to addiction treatment. Rooted in the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and similar programs, TSF promotes personal accountability, community connection, and spiritual growth.
At San Diego Detox, we incorporate TSF as part of a holistic, adaptive treatment model. While we maintain 12-step programming as a core option, we also offer alternatives such as SMART Recovery and Refuge Recovery. This inclusive approach ensures clients feel empowered—not boxed in.
TSF helps individuals engage with and progress through the principles of 12-step programs. Its goals are to build community, foster self-awareness, and promote a structured framework for long-term sobriety.
The foundation of 12-step work rests on deeply transformative principles:
Recognizing addiction as a disease, not a moral failure. Acceptance creates a starting point for real, shame-free recovery.
TSF teaches clients that overcoming addiction requires letting go of the idea they can manage it alone. Surrender is not about defeat—it’s about connection and transformation.
TSF instills a commitment to serve others in recovery, which reinforces purpose and personal stability.
Making amends and showing up for yourself and your community creates real growth and long-term sobriety.
TSF offers wide-ranging benefits for those in recovery, including:
These benefits grow even stronger when integrated with complementary modalities—something we prioritize at San Diego Detox.
At San Diego Detox, TSF is offered in both individual and group settings. We guide clients through the 12 steps at their own pace, using a trauma-informed, client-first model.
Our therapists are trained in multiple modalities so they can help each client explore how TSF aligns with their beliefs and goals. For clients who connect strongly with 12-step work, we encourage outside meeting attendance, sponsor relationships, and step study. For those needing a different approach, we support alternatives while still emphasizing the core values of growth, connection, and service.
TSF is never about conformity—it’s about providing tools and community that empower recovery. In my view, what makes our program successful is our openness: we meet clients where they are and provide the structure they need to move forward.
If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, San Diego Detox offers compassionate, flexible support. Whether through 12-step facilitation or alternative methods, we’ll work together to build a lasting recovery plan that aligns with your values and vision for the future.
